Introduction: Avenues is the curriculum used in the ESL/Bilingual program throughout the district. We are very excited about this program as it will enable us to work more effectively with the students as well as side-by-side with classroom teachers.
About Avenues: Avenues is a language and literacy program ranging from kindergarten through Grade 5. It is a research-based, comprehensive, content-based curriculum. Using this curriculum allows us to reinforce students’ classroom learning in both pull-out and push-in settings through vocabulary building, hands-on resources, and best-practice instruction. This curriculum provides a language-rich environment with opportunities to hear, see, and use new vocabulary. Hands-on activities, graphic organizers, and visuals develop vocabulary skills and give access to academic language. Avenues also provides multiple opportunities for peer interaction, instructional grouping, and individual advancement. This curriculum aligns with the district’s and the State’s learning standards. It also incorporates the components of the district’s six-traits writing program into the curriculum and into every lesson. Additionally, Avenues aligns with the District 105’s guided reading program used in every classroom.
